Roswell Santa Fe Railroad Payroll — Chaves County

Lost Treasure NM • Chaves County County
Description
Roswell legend of an unrecovered Santa Fe Railway payroll from the era when the 1893 railroad transformed the Chaves County seat into the Pecos Valley's commercial hub.
Historical Notes
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached Roswell in 1893, accelerating growth after Nathan Jaffa's 1890 artesian-well discovery. Chaves County had been carved from Lincoln County in 1889 with Roswell as county seat. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Carrizozo, Clovis, and Melrose entries along the southeastern New Mexico corridor. Roswell later became a division point for cattle, oil, and military aviation commerce. Coordinates mark downtown Roswell in Chaves County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
