Roswell Pecos River Hidden Spanish Gold — Chaves County

Lost Treasure NM • Chaves County County
Description
Pecos Valley legend of Spanish gold hurriedly hidden along the Pecos River near Roswell — when explorers retreated from the arid plains country between the Sangre de Cristo and the Texas line.
Historical Notes
The Pecos River flows from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains through Roswell and southeastward to the Rio Grande. Regional folklore describes Spanish parties caching gold along remote river bends when threatened by native attacks or rival expeditions. Chaves County treasure guides and Pecos River heritage accounts collect these legends alongside documented cattle-baron and railroad strongbox tales. No authenticated Spanish hoard has been recovered near Roswell. Coordinates approximate the Pecos River corridor east of downtown Roswell in Chaves County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
