Roswell Chihuahuita District Buried Treasure — Chaves County

Lost Treasure NM • Chaves County County
Description
Roswell legend of buried treasure in the Chihuahuita folk tale — the original Rio Hondo settlement along the Hondo River where Hispanic pioneers settled before Anglo Roswell grew north of the water.
Historical Notes
Chihuahuita — "little Chihuahua" — is the oldest part of Roswell, originally called Rio Hondo. Hispanic settlers from Chihuahua and northern New Mexico established farms and sheep ranches along the Hondo River before Van C. Smith founded Roswell in 1872. Roswell Daily Record archivist Janice Dunnahoo and local historians have documented a Chihuahua-district folk tale that includes buried treasure among its traditional stories. WPA folklore collections for southeastern New Mexico preserve similar pioneer-cache narratives. Coordinates approximate the Chihuahuita historic district along the Hondo River in southern Roswell.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
