Ross Mine — Shafter District

Gold Mining Site TX • Presidio County County
Description
The Ross Mine in the Shafter Mining District was worked in 1890–1891 for lead-silver ore with gold byproduct — an early satellite of the Presidio Mine in the Chinati Mountains.
Historical Notes
The Ross Mine in Section 9, Block 7, Houston and Texas Central Survey was worked in 1890 and 1891. TSHA notes lead-silver ore was mined but little was shipped — typical of the district's smaller prospects. Samuel B. Buckley's 1876 state survey found Chinati ore assaying up to $76.28 per ton in silver, spurring the rush that made Shafter Texas's dominant precious-metals camp. Coordinates approximate the Ross Mine in the Shafter Mining District.
