Rogers Rangers Silver Madonna Castle Ravines

Lost Treasure NH • Coos County County
Description
Coos County legend of a two-and-a-half-foot solid silver Madonna statue and other St. Francis raid plunder lost in the Castle and Cascade ravines below Mount Washington near Randolph.
Historical Notes
In October 1759 Rogers' Rangers looted a Jesuit mission at St. Francis, Quebec, including a ten-pound silver Madonna. Sergeant Benjamin Bradley and eight men perished in the Castle and Cascade ravines near Randolph while carrying the statue up the Israel River route. Treasure hunters have searched the north slopes of Mount Washington for decades; a separate tradition places a silver Madonna concealed upstream from Lancaster on the Israel River.
