Rio Grande City was the Starr County seat and a major nineteenth-century river port. River-steamer treasure lore clusters along the Rio Grande from Laredo to the Gulf. Shifting channels and silt have buried wreck sites; occasional timber and boiler exposures fuel salvage searches.
