The Rocker Box Lincoln County compilation states the Rio Bonito Cave of Silver, consisting of blackened silver bars, is said to be located somewhere on the Rio Bonito. The river valley was settled as Las Placitas del Rio Bonito before Lincoln became the county seat in 1869. Spanish-era silver-cave tales appear throughout Lincoln County alongside Lincoln County War outlaw caches. Guide to Treasure in New Mexico is among the guidebooks citing the Rio Bonito variant.
