Riley Mountains Cerro del Almagre — Llano County

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Cerro del Almagre (Riley Mountains) north of Honey Creek — the 1756 Los Almagres prospect where Miranda opened shafts and reported ochre iron-oxide rock associated with precious-metal lore in the Llano Uplift.
Historical Notes
In February 1756 Bernardo de Miranda y Flores reached the cerro de almagre a quarter league from Honey Creek and opened the San José del Alcazar shaft. Governor Barrios sent ore samples to Mexico City; assays were inconclusive and Apache hostilities halted work. Anglo-Texans relocated the old diggings in 1842 without connecting them to the San Sabá legend. Bolton tied Miranda's journal route to the Boyd shaft on Honey Creek in the Riley Mountains northeast of Packsaddle Mountain. Fine placer gold appears in Riley Creek and Llano River gravels draining this upland. Related treasure entry "Los Almagres Mine (Riley Mountains)" documents folklore; most land is private ranch property.
