Historical Notes
Riley Creek flows through the Oxford quadrangle near Riley Mountains, Silver Creek, and Legion Creek in the Honey Creek / Los Almagres mineral district northeast of Packsaddle Mountain. Llano Uplift streams carry fine gold eroded from Precambrian bedrock and mine spoil. Work inside bends and bedrock cracks after high water; pyrite ("fool's gold") is common in iron-oxide country. Related entry "Riley Mountains Cerro del Almagre — Llano County" documents the adjacent historic mine tradition. Private ranch land — secure permission.
