Shelby County legend of a feud-era strongbox buried during the Regulator-Moderator War (1839–1844) — East Texas's bloodiest internal conflict, centered northeast of Nacogdoches.
Historical Notes
The Regulator-Moderator War in Shelby and surrounding counties pitted vigilante factions against each other in a dispute that drew in land speculators, merchants, and armed bands. It was among the most violent civil conflicts in antebellum Texas. Feud folklore commonly describes parties burying cash and silver before raids or arrests. Shelbyville and the Shelby County courthouse district were at the heart of the conflict east of Nacogdoches. Coordinates approximate Shelbyville in Shelby County northeast of Nacogdoches.
