Reed Gold Mine Outlaw Cache — Midland

Lost Treasure NC • Cabarrus County County
Description
Cabarrus County legend of unrecovered placer gold buried near John Reed's 1799 discovery on Little Meadow Creek — America's first gold rush site with two centuries of cache folklore.
Historical Notes
Conrad Reed found a 17-pound nugget in 1799, launching the nation's first gold rush. John Reed's partners recovered an estimated $100,000 by 1824, but legends hold miners and outlaws hid nuggets rather than share with tax collectors. North Carolina led national gold production until 1848. Civil War disruption and later lode closures left tales of buried sluice-box savings along Meadow Creek. Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site preserves tunnels; adjacent woods still draw detector hobbyists.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
