Red River Treasure (Bowie Bank Robbery)

Lost Treasure TX • Montague / Jefferson (OK border) County
Description
$10,000 in $20 gold pieces from the 1894 First National Bank robbery in Bowie, Texas — never recovered. Outlaws reportedly buried the coins near their flooded Red River campsite at Rock Crossing.
Historical Notes
In 1894 four men robbed the First National Bank in Bowie of $28,000. Escaping north, they camped on the south bank of the flooded Red River on the Texas–Oklahoma border near Rock Crossing. Posses arrested the gang, recovering $18,000 in paper money from saddlebags — but none of the $10,000 in gold double-eagles. Before hanging at Fort Smith, one robber told U.S. Deputy Marshal Lewis Palmore the gold was buried near their final campsite. Palmore searched repeatedly without success; his son later used a metal detector, also failing. Cache said to lie between the Highway 81 bridge and the mouth of the Little Wichita River.
