Historical Notes
Grayson County TSHA records that William Clarke Quantrill's guerrillas made frequent visits during the war years, affording residents anxious moments though the area suffered neither invasion nor severe deprivation. Sherman TSHA likewise notes outlaw bands led by Jesse James and Quantrill appeared in Sherman during and after the war, amid a period of lawlessness and depression that plagued Reconstruction-era Grayson County. Border-state guerrilla folklore often places raid loot and pay chests cached in creek bottoms when columns moved between Indian Territory and North Texas. Coordinates mark central Sherman.
