Portneuf Canyon Strongbox Gold — Virginia City Freight

Lost Treasure MT • Madison County County
Description
Montana side of the 1865 Portneuf Canyon legend — fifteen gold bars and dust pouches robbed from a Virginia City–bound Holladay stage in eastern Idaho, believed buried near the holdup because dead outlaws died penniless.
Historical Notes
The July 26, 1865 Brockie Jack gang massacre on the Portneuf stage began with freight originating in the Virginia City mining district bound toward Utah. Whittmore, Williams, and Sheriff David Updyke were killed or hanged without spending the $86,000 haul, fueling speculation the bullion never left the canyon country. Legends of America treats the robbery as a joint Idaho–Montana treasure tale along the Montana Road to Salt Lake.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
