Portneuf Canyon Stage Robbery Gold (1865)

Lost Treasure ID • Bannock County County
Description
1865 Portneuf Canyon legend of Brockie Jack, Big Dave Updyke, and accomplices seizing $86,000 in gold bars and dust from a Virginia City stage — loot never sold and believed buried near the robbery site south of Pocatello.
Historical Notes
On July 26, 1865, four outlaws ambushed a Ben Holladay stage in a timbered canyon south of present-day Pocatello, killing most passengers and hauling away fifteen gold bars plus dust-filled pouches. Whittmore, Williams, and Updyke were killed or hanged nearly penniless; Brockie Jack vanished. No record exists of the bars being fenced. Treasure hunters speculate the weight forced burial near Portneuf River canyons — worth well over $1.6 million in modern bullion value.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
