Port Royal Sound Pirate Hoard — Hilton Head

Lost Treasure SC • Beaufort County County
Description
Beaufort County legend of pirate plunder buried in Port Royal Sound marshes — where Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry "Buccaneer Coast" sheltered Blackbeard-era raiders.
Historical Notes
Port Royal Sound offered one of the Atlantic coast's best harbors. Pirates used Hilton Head, Daufuskie, and marsh islands to stash loot from merchant prizes. Hilton Head fishing charters and local historians describe generations of searches for gold coins, colonial jewelry, and Civil War relics in the sound's shipwrecks and tidal creeks. The area's strategic Civil War naval battles added blockade-runner and payroll legends atop colonial pirate lore.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
