The Rocker Box Cameron County compilation describes a jug containing $90,000 buried at or near Port Isabel. Port Isabel served as the deepwater port for the lower Rio Grande before the Brownsville Ship Channel and connects to South Padre Island via the Queen Isabella Causeway. Port Isabel beaches have yielded coins from shipwrecks according to regional guidebooks. The Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site preserves the nineteenth-century port landscape.
