Port Arthur Gulf Refinery Row Payroll — Jefferson County

Lost Treasure TX • Jefferson County County
Description
Port Arthur legend of a refinery or ship-channel payroll cache from the petrochemical boom that turned the Sabine Lake shore into one of the world's largest refining corridors.
Historical Notes
Port Arthur was founded in 1895 by Arthur E. Stilwell as a Gulf terminus for his Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad. The town became Jefferson County's deepwater port and, after Spindletop, the center of massive refinery construction on Sabine Lake. Company-town and shipyard payroll caches mirror oil-boom strongbox traditions in Beaumont and Houston. Port Arthur's Museum of the Gulf Coast documents the region's petroleum and maritime heritage. Coordinates mark downtown Port Arthur on Sabine Lake in southeastern Jefferson County.
