Pontotoc San Fernando Academy Merchant Specie — Mason County

Lost Treasure TX • Mason County County
Description
Pontotoc legend of merchant specie from the San Fernando Academy era — when the Hill Country town at the Llano–Mason–San Saba crossroads boasted twenty businesses before typhoid and missed railroads ended its promise.
Historical Notes
Pontotoc lies at the junction of State Highway 71 and Farm Road 501 near Pontotoc Creek in northeastern Mason County, on the historic roads from Llano and Fort Mason to San Saba. The San Fernando Academy, founded in 1882, once drew as many as 200 students and helped Pontotoc grow to more than twenty businesses by 1890. A typhoid epidemic nearly wiped out the town in 1887, and the academy closed in 1890; three proposed railroad lines missed Pontotoc by miles. Academy-and-merchant folklore sometimes places strongboxes when booming crossroads towns declined. Castell lies eighteen miles east on the Llano River. Coordinates mark Pontotoc at the SH 71 and FM 501 junction in northeastern Mason County west of Castell.
