Pontotoc Community Church — Mason County

Historic Church TX • Mason County County
Description
Historic church community at Pontotoc in northeastern Mason County; town grew around San Fernando Academy and supported multiple denominations before the 1887 typhoid epidemic.
Historical Notes
Pontotoc at SH 71 and FM 501 was a crossroads of Llano, Fort Mason, and San Saba wagon roads. By 1890 the town had two doctors and more than twenty businesses alongside academy-era churches. The 1887 typhoid fever epidemic nearly destroyed the town; cemetery closure in 1888 and missed railroads ended Pontotoc's bid to become a county seat.
