1851 legend of $40,000 in gold coins buried near a Santa Fe Trail campsite at Point of Rocks, a landmark spring and notorious violence site in northeastern New Mexico.
Historical Notes
Two pioneers reportedly buried $40,000 in gold near their campsite on the Santa Fe Trail at Point of Rocks in 1851. The landmark lies on private land roughly eight miles north and two miles east of a US Highway 56 roadside park in Colfax County. Point of Rocks was a popular campsite with a spring. The White family killings of 1849 occurred nearby; grave sites mark the area's violent trail history.
