Plains Wagon Train Payroll — Yoakum County

Lost Treasure TX • Yoakum County County
Description
Yoakum County legend of a freight-wagon payroll buried near Plains — the county seat on the far southwestern South Plains toward the New Mexico line.
Historical Notes
Plains developed as the Yoakum County seat after the county organized in 1907 on the far southwestern Llano Estacado. Freight wagons and early automobiles crossed the open plains between Lubbock, Hobbs, and the Pecos country. Wagon-payroll and stage-strongbox folklore clusters at remote county seats beyond bank networks. Yoakum County remains among the most sparsely settled counties in the Lubbock trade area. Coordinates mark Plains in central Yoakum County southwest of Lubbock.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
