Pirate John Clifton Oyster River Durham

Lost Treasure NH • Strafford County County
Description
Strafford County legend of pirate John Clifton burying Caribbean plunder near the Oyster River mouth at Great Bay in Durham in 1716 — dying before he could recover it.
Historical Notes
John Clifton reportedly raided in the Caribbean before concealing a large treasure near Durham on Great Bay. He died shortly after the burial; compiled guides presume the hoard remains near the Oyster River mouth. The tale anchors Strafford County to the same Great Bay pirate corridor as Portsmouth and the Isles of Shoals.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
