Pilot Grove Lickskillet Pioneer Specie — Grayson County

Lost Treasure TX • Grayson County County
Description
Southeast Grayson County legend of pioneer specie near Pilot Grove — the 1850 Peters-colony settlement originally called Lickskillet on the Pilot Grove Ranch.
Historical Notes
Pilot Grove was settled about 1850 and originally called Lickskillet. It acquired its present name from the nearby Pilot Grove Ranch of James P. Dumas when the post office opened in 1850. Grayson County was part of the Peters colony survey in the early 1840s; early settlements also included Preston Bend, Pilot Grove in the southeastern part of the county, and Warren. By 1860 the county had 8,184 residents. Peters-colony folklore imagines settler strongboxes in cedar breaks when families moved from open prairie to Red River tributary farms. Coordinates mark Pilot Grove on Farm Road 121 southeast of Sherman.
