Peyton Freedmen Colony Strongbox — Blanco County

Lost Treasure TX • Blanco County County
Description
Peyton legend of a freedmen's colony strongbox near Blanco — the Reconstruction-era settlement where formerly enslaved families built farms after the Civil War.
Historical Notes
After emancipation, most formerly enslaved people who remained in Blanco County settled in Peyton, a freedmen's colony near Blanco. By 1870 only forty-four Black residents lived in the county, most probably at Peyton. Reconstruction-era folklore sometimes places emergency specie buried when remote farming colonies handled cash far from Freedmen's Bureau protection. Peyton lies in the southern Blanco County river country between Blanco and Johnson City. Coordinates approximate the Peyton community area near Blanco in Blanco County.
