Perrin Field WWII Flight School Payroll — Grayson County

Lost Treasure TX • Grayson County County
Description
Sherman legend of wartime payroll near Perrin Army Air Field — when roughly 2,500 pilots a year received basic flight instruction before the base became Perrin Air Force Base.
Historical Notes
Grayson County leased land near Sherman to the federal government in 1941 for Perrin Army Air Field, established as a basic flying school in the summer of 1941 and named for Lt. Col. Elmer D. Perrin. During World War II approximately 2,500 potential pilots per year received basic instruction at the base. Perrin was deactivated in 1946, reactivated as Perrin Air Force Base in April 1948, and conducted jet pilot training until closing in 1970. WWII base folklore imagines paymaster pouches and club strongboxes hurriedly cached when cadet classes rotated or when the installation transferred to Grayson County in 1970. Coordinates approximate the former Perrin Field east of Sherman.
