Penwell Ghost Town Payroll — Ector County

Lost Treasure TX • Ector County County
Description
Ector County legend of an unrecovered oil-camp or railroad payroll buried near Penwell — a ghost town on US 80 between Odessa and Pecos.
Historical Notes
Penwell developed as a highway and railroad siding west of Odessa on the route toward Pecos and the Trans-Pecos oil fields. Ghost-town and camp payroll caches are common in West Texas boom-and-bust folklore. Penwell sits near the Ector–Ward county line on the Permian Basin rim toward the sandhills. Related entries document Monahans Sandhills wagon-train legends to the south. Coordinates approximate Penwell in western Ector County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
