Penobscot River Revolutionary War Wrecks

Lost Treasure ME • Waldo County County
Description
Waldo County legend of warships and cargo vessels sunk in the Penobscot River during the Revolutionary War with valuables still unrecovered — the Penobscot Expedition disaster hoard.
Historical Notes
The 1779 Penobscot Expedition ended in a disastrous American retreat up the Penobscot River. Compiled guides describe multiple war ships and cargo vessels scuttled or lost with little salvage of their valuables. The wreck field spans Waldo and Hancock counties; Waldo lists emphasize the river channel near Bucksport and Prospect.
