Peabody & Caldwell Express Robbery Loot

Lost Treasure MT • Madison County County
Description
October 26, 1863 legend of the first territorial stage robbery — two masked men holding up the Peabody & Caldwell Express between Rattlesnake Ranch and Bannack with unrecovered passenger gold.
Historical Notes
The holdup between Rattlesnake Ranch and Bannack shocked Alder Gulch camps as the first express robbery in Montana Territory. Two masked robbers fled without killing anyone, but treasure writers assume at least partial loot was cached before vigilante pressure intensified. The event predates the Oliver Coach and Portneuf Canyon robberies in the road-agent chronology.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
