Paola MK&T Train Robbery Safe

Lost Treasure KS • Miami County County
Description
Paola legend of bandits burying an unopened railroad safe of gold and silver coins about 100 yards from the tracks after robbing a Missouri-Kansas-Texas passenger train in July 1918.
Historical Notes
On July 10, 1918 two men robbed an MK&T passenger train near Paola and removed a small safe of gold and silver coins. Unable to crack the safe before escape, they buried it at the woods edge roughly 100 yards from the tracks. A captured bandit confessed the location, but the money was reportedly never recovered. Eastern Kansas railroad robbery lore complements western prairie stage and wagon tales.
