Historical Notes
The Battle of Palo Alto was fought on May 8, 1846, on the coastal prairie north of present Brownsville. Gen. Zachary Taylor's U.S. forces defeated Mexican troops under Gen. Mariano Arista, beginning the Mexican War. The Rocker Box Cameron County compilation cites $250,000 buried by the Mexican Army after the Palo Alto defeat. Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park preserves the site northwest of Brownsville. Coordinates mark the Palo Alto battlefield in Cameron County north of Brownsville.
