Lost Treasure MT • Musselshell County County
Description
June 1892 legend of the Billings and Great Falls stage held up on Painted Robe Hill — nine miles south of Lavina, where masked robbers seized mail sacks and the treasury box before the coach reached Billings.
Historical Notes
The June 3, 1892 Anaconda Standard reported the Billings and Great Falls line coach robbed at 9 a.m. on Painted Robe Hill, nine miles south of Lavina; driver "Old Bill" threw out the treasury box and two mail sacks under gunpoint. Passengers Halsey R. Watson and his mother were unmolested; a posse dispatched from Billings that evening. TreasureNet ties the strongbox to a 1922 empty stagecoach box found near an old cellar east of Lavina. Coordinates mark Painted Robe Hill south of Lavina on the Billings–Great Falls corridor. Private ranch land — legend only.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
