Description
Central north Padre Island — folklore name for the 113-mile barrier island backstop where Gulf storms have driven countless ships ashore since the 1554 disaster, scattering unrecovered cargo along the dunes.
Historical Notes
Texas Standard and regional historians call Padre Island the "graveyard of the Gulf" because prevailing storm tracks push disabled vessels onto its sandbars from Veracruz-to-Spain shipping lanes. Beyond the documented 1554 fleet, wreck masters including John Singer profited from salvaging timbers, rigging, and personal goods lost on the island through the nineteenth century. Coordinates approximate mid–north island within Padre Island National Seashore — a corridor of recurring shipwreck treasure lore rather than one pinpoint hoard.
