Padre Ballí Beach Chest Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Kenedy County County
Description
South Padre Island beach legend of the Singer family finding Spanish coins and a wooden chest holding roughly $80,000 in jewelry and specie while patrolling the strand near Las Cruces Ranch.
Historical Notes
While operating as island wreck master and rancher, John Singer and his family reportedly discovered Spanish coins on the beach and, in one account, an entire chest of jewelry and coins. Treasure writers link the finds to centuries of plate-fleet losses on Padre Island rather than a single documented burial. Whether the chest tale is literal or embroidered salvage folklore, it became part of the fortune Singer later hid in Money Hill before the Civil War expulsion.
