Pacuache Crossing Smuggler's Trail Cache — Maverick County

Lost Treasure TX • Maverick County County
Description
Southern Maverick County legend of smuggled specie along the Pacuache Crossing trail — the underground trade route north of the Camino Real used after the Texas Revolution.
Historical Notes
Although direct trade with Texas was forbidden by the Mexican government after the Texas Revolution, Mexican villages near the Rio Grande continued underground commerce with San Antonio via the Pacuache Crossing of the Rio Grande and a smuggler's trail immediately north of the Camino Real. Mexican general Adrián Woll followed the route en route to his 1842 San Antonio expedition. Border smuggling folklore places strongboxes and contraband silver in brush-country arroyos along alternate crossings south of Eagle Pass. Coordinates approximate the Pacuache Crossing reach in southern Maverick County on the Rio Grande plain. Most land is private ranch property.
