Packsaddle Mountain — Llano County Prospecting

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Packsaddle Mountain ridge in southern Llano County — landmark of the Llano Uplift with 1920s prospecting activity, Blanco Mine lore, and Sam Bass treasure traditions. Historical lode and placer interest on private ranch land.
Historical Notes
Packsaddle Mountain is a prominent ridge in southern Llano County visible for miles across the Hill Country. Regional histories record 1920s prospecting on the mountain and persistent treasure legends tying the site to Sam Bass loot and Spanish-era diggings. J. Frank Dobie's Coronado's Children describes the Blanco Mine on Packsaddle: old Spanish diggings rediscovered by Llano settler Larimore, who with Jim Rowland hauled out hundreds of pounds of bullet-grade metal in 1860 before burying the entrance. Related treasure entry "Sam Bass Treasure — Packsaddle Mountain" documents outlaw-cache folklore separately. Gold in the Llano Uplift occurs in quartz veins and as fine placer in nearby draws. All Packsaddle Mountain land is private — historical reference only; no trespassing.
