Packsaddle Mountain 1920s Gold Prospecting Shafts

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Early-twentieth-century gold prospecting shafts on Packsaddle Mountain — when 1920s diggings renewed Llano County mining interest with wire nails and dynamite-fractured spoil over older Spanish and Anglo workings.
Historical Notes
TSHA records that prospecting on Packsaddle Mountain renewed interest in gold mining in Llano County during the 1920s, but with no lasting commercial result. Texas Beyond History notes wire nails and dynamite-fractured angular spoil distinct from Spanish Colonial barras-sized rubble at the same ridge sites. Texas Escapes and regional histories describe intermittent Llano Uplift gold promotion from the late 1800s through Depression-era prospecting. Production never matched West Texas or California districts; hobby collectors still find fine flakes in adjacent draws. Coordinates approximate 1920s-era prospects on the Packsaddle Mountain ridge. Private property — historical reference only.
