Description
Church at Oxford on State Highway 16; trade town nicknamed "Cat Town" after an 1880s dance-hall incident, near Los Almagres mine traditions.
Historical Notes
Oxford was first settled in the mid-1850s and hosted the Bedford Academy receiving students from across southern Llano County. A. J. Johnson named the town in 1880 for Oxford, Mississippi. Oxford declined in the early 1900s and lost its post office by 1924. Regional treasure entries document the Rangers Lost Gold Mine and Los Almagres traditions near Honey Creek northeast of town.
