Ouachita River Spanish Lead Mine Treasure

Lost Treasure AR • Ouachita County County
Description
South Arkansas legend of Spanish-era lead and silver workings along the Ouachita River near Camden — with buried smelter gold before the colonial enterprise collapsed.
Historical Notes
Spanish and French colonial trade on the Ouachita is documented, and nineteenth-century settlers retold stories of old mines and furnace sites in the Camden hills. Treasure variants claim bullion was buried when disease or hostile tribes ended the operation, distinct from the Benton County cave tradition in the Ozarks. Geologists have found no major Spanish mine in Ouachita County; the entry reflects colonial-era folklore common along Gulf-facing river systems.
