Old Stone Fort Mexican Gold Coins — Nacogdoches

Lost Treasure TX • Nacogdoches County County
Description
Nacogdoches legend tied to the Old Stone Fort: Mexican gold coins reportedly found when the structure was moved to the Stephen F. Austin State University campus, with larger garrison hoards still sought.
Historical Notes
The Old Stone Fort (La Casa Piedra) was built as a trading post around 1779 and later housed Mexican garrison troops under Col. Jose de las Piedras in the 1830s. When the building was relocated to SFASU, Mexican gold coins were recovered according to museum tradition cited on TreasureNet. Local detectorists report Spanish silver from the Nacogdoches area and believe additional Mexican gold from the garrison period remains hidden. The Stone Fort Museum preserves the structure today. Coordinates mark the Stone Fort on the SFASU campus in Nacogdoches.
