Old Spanish Treasure Cave — Sulphur Springs

Lost Treasure AR • Benton County County
Description
Benton County cave system near Sulphur Springs where 1880s explorers reported Spanish-era pick marks, walled passages, and folklore of gold and armor left by Conquistador-era miners along the Missouri–Arkansas border.
Historical Notes
Old Spanish Treasure Cave is a commercial cave north of Sulphur Springs visited since the late nineteenth century. Early accounts claimed blocked tunnels, stone walls, and tools predating American settlement. Local tradition says Spanish miners worked the Ozark plateau for lead and silver, caching bullion before retreating. No authenticated Spanish hoard has been recovered, but the cave remains central to Arkansas–Missouri border treasure lore. Modern operators continue to market the site; researchers note that many "Spanish" features may be nineteenth-century mining or cave-tour construction.
