Old Hazel Mine — Culberson County

Gold Mining Site TX • Culberson County County
Description
The Old Hazel Mine in Culberson County was the last Texas mine to report gold production — eighteen tons of ore in 1952 with one ounce of gold among copper, lead, and silver values.
Historical Notes
TSHA states the last reported gold production in Texas came from the Presidio mine in 1942, but also records eighteen tons mined from the Old Hazel Mine in Culberson County in 1952 valued at $8,712 — including one ounce of gold with copper output. The Van Horn–Allamoore mining district in Culberson County produced copper from several deposits; gold occurs as trace byproduct in the same Trans-Pecos Precambrian country north of Van Horn. Related entry: "Van Horn Allamoore Mining District — Culberson County" documents the broader district. Private ranch and claim land. Coordinates approximate the Old Hazel Mine in the Van Horn–Allamoore district.
