Offerle California Miners Gold Dust

Lost Treasure KS • Edwards County County
Description
Arkansas River legend of $90,000 in California gold dust buried in a Dutch oven near Offerle after an 1851 Indian attack — known only through a surviving eight-year-old captive's story.
Historical Notes
In 1851 returning California miners and families were attacked across the Arkansas River from what became Taylor Ranch, two miles southwest of Offerle. Folklore says $90,000 in gold dust was buried in a Dutch oven. Only an eight-year-old girl survived, later passing the tale to descendants. In 1918 a woman arrived in Kinsley with a map pointing southwest of town but failed to locate the cache. Local landowners dispute the legend, yet it persists in compiled guides.
