Odessa Texas Pacific Railroad Payroll — Ector County

Lost Treasure TX • Ector County County
Description
Odessa legend of a Texas and Pacific Railway payroll strongbox from the era when the cattle-shipping town rivaled Midland on the Permian Basin line.
Historical Notes
Odessa was founded in 1886 as a water stop and cattle-shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The town name echoes the Ukrainian steppe — a nod to the treeless plains that reminded settlers of the Russian Odessa. Ector County developed as ranch country with Odessa as county seat. Railroad payroll and cattle-sale cash traditions cluster at Permian Basin division towns between Monahans and Big Spring. Coordinates mark downtown Odessa in Ector County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
