Nueces River Two Priests Twenty-Five Thousand — Zavala County

Lost Treasure TX • Zavala County County
Description
Nueces River legend of $25,000 buried with two priests near the river northwest of Cotulla in the La Salle–Zavala ranch corridor.
Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Zavala County compilation states that $25,000 is supposedly buried with two priests near the Nueces River. The Nueces drains most of La Salle County from the west toward the Gulf; Zavala County borders La Salle to the northwest. Mission-priest burial caches appear throughout South Texas guidebooks along the Old Presidio Road and Nueces crossings. Friar Juan Agustín Morfi crossed the Nueces and passed Palo Alto in 1777 while traveling the lower camino real. Coordinates approximate the Nueces River valley on the La Salle–Zavala county line northwest of Cotulla.
