Description
Live Oak County legend of the Ramírez family fortune buried in or near old Fort Ramírez — a private Spanish-era fort on the south bank of the Nueces in the early nineteenth century.
Historical Notes
Early in the nineteenth century a private fort, Ramírez, was built on the south bank of the Nueces in southern Live Oak County, probably on a family land grant from the king of Spain. The Rocker Box Live Oak County page states the family fortune of a man named Ramirez is buried in or near old Fort Ramirez. After 1821 the Mexican government made numerous grants in the Trans-Nueces reaching to the river itself.
