Nueces River Mouth Lafitte Plunder Chests — Nueces County

Lost Treasure TX • Nueces County County
Description
Nueces Bay legend that Jean Lafitte buried several chests of plunder near the mouth of the Nueces River where the hidden Río Escondido empties into the Coastal Bend.
Historical Notes
The Nueces was the first Texas river prominently placed on European maps as the Río Escondido ("Hidden River") because its mouth lay behind barrier islands. The Rocker Box Nueces County page states Jean Lafitte supposedly buried several chests of plunder near the mouth of the Nueces River. Corpus Christi developed at the river mouth from an 1832 trading post; Zachary Taylor's army arrived in 1845. Lafitte folklore also places caches on Padre Island and Mustang Island in the same county compilation. Coordinates mark the Nueces River mouth at Nueces Bay near Corpus Christi.
