Description

Historical Notes
In 1830 the Mexican government established Fort Lipantitlán on the Nueces near San Patricio. In 1842 the post served the Republic of Texas for defense against Mexican invaders. The lower Nueces formed the international boundary dispute zone before 1848. Border fort folklore commonly describes buried pay chests and customs funds when garrisons evacuated. Lipantitlán State Historic Site overlooks the lower Nueces for visitors tracing the revolutionary period. Coordinates approximate Lipantitlán on the lower Nueces River in San Patricio County.
