Nueces River Fort Merrill Army Payroll — Live Oak County

Lost Treasure TX • Live Oak County County
Description
Live Oak County legend of a U.S. Army pay chest cached near Fort Merrill — the 1850 frontier post on the right bank of the Nueces in the brush country.
Historical Notes
Fort Merrill was established in 1850 on the right bank of the Nueces River in Live Oak County as a United States Army frontier post. Fort Ewell (1852) in La Salle County was a companion post farther upstream. Cavalry-post payroll folklore mirrors Fort Ewell and Lipantitlán traditions along the same river. The Nueces turned northeast through McMullen County before the Frio and Atascosa joined near Three Rivers. Coordinates approximate Fort Merrill on the Nueces River in Live Oak County.
