Nueces River Dimmit De León Pecan Camp Cache — Dimmit County

Lost Treasure TX • Dimmit County County
Description
Dimmit County legend of colonial specie cached along the Río de las Nueces where Alonso De León crossed in 1689 and named the river for its pecan-lined banks.
Historical Notes
In 1689 Alonso De León crossed the Nueces in what is now Dimmit or Zavala County and named it Río de las Nueces ("River of Nuts") for the pecan trees growing along its banks. Coahuiltecan peoples called the stream Chotilapacquen. In March 1707 Diego Ramón of San Juan Bautista traced the river through Dimmit and La Salle counties while fighting hostile Indians. Entrada and presidio-road folklore often places buried funds at named crossings. Coordinates approximate the Nueces River in Dimmit County on the Winter Garden plain.
